Reading is one of our most important sources for everything else we do. Just imagine trying to teach your child simple daily challenges like reading a birthday card! That’s a simple one, but how about reading medicine bottles, road signs, recipes or instructions to use an appliance? These are common occurances and if you cannot read, you are tragically inept for daily living!
Many things put lives in danger if a person cannot read! You can skit by in this life without the ability to read, but it will certainly handicap you tremendously! Then and only then will we avoid manipulation and control by a government or tyrant who would strive to control us by our ignorance!

“Illiterate America,” by Jonathan Kozal quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,” the three main reasons people give for wanting to read are: 1. Read the Bible, 2. To read books and newspapers, and 3. Help their children. These are persuasive and important reasons, but shouldn’t reading medicine bottles, doctor’s instructions or job applications be in that priority list in order to function productively?
We can all agree that reading is a crucial life skill and gives us the freedom to change our destiny through the knowledge gained by reading!
