Older Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Face Dilemmas
Diabetes Type 1 in Adults is a real dilemma! That is the BIG tragedy of today! A diabetic with Type 1 has a complicated life dealing with disease and the high cost of diabetic supplies. Medical Insurances do not offer good coverage for diabetics type 1 in adults. A 50-year-old Type 1 diabetic pays way too much for necessary medical supplies. Insulin is often a reasonable cost, but the supplies needed with it are outrageous!
My son is a Diabetic Type 1 and his good Medical Insurance continues to ignore the unrealistic costs of maintaining a diabetic’s necessities. An average salary does not afford the monumental costs. Added to this problem is the possible loss of a spouse. A spouse helps the diabetic maximize the quality of life. My son often needs a 911 call to rush him to the Emergency Room when he has a sudden drop of blood sugar while he sleeps. They cannot seem to properly stabalize him once he is asleep.
He paid lots of money for the latest electronic gadgets that do not pick up quickly enough on his sudden colossal sugar drops. By the time the whistles and bells alert him, he can no longer help himself! It is very frightening for me! Thank God his sister is a nurse and is here at night most of the time. She is so efficient in treating him, but I usually have to call 911 because he gets combative and I cannot help him. I believe he could be stabilized with the right study. How do we get special attention to special problems for victims like my son?

Diabetics and their families must insist on Insurance Companies funding needs and supplies adequately! Their own ability to fund their medical needs should not dictate their quality of life. We need to encourage Insurance Companies to study and solve this problem! Insurance Companies must step up!! Time is of the essence!!! Now, it is too late for my son! He had a tragic fatal accident six months ago when his sugar dropped suddenly while he was driving home from work. I miss him terribly, but I believe he is in a better place! However, many victims still need help!
