Peddler’s Village – A Place to Visit

Peddler’s Village actually is in Lahaska, PA, not in New Hope, as many believe. It is an hour and a half from New York City and just 45 minutes from downtown Philadelphia. Peddler’s Village is anything but an ordinary recreational or business venture. Here you can expect royal and attentive treatment whether you come for a day or an extended period. You will be pleased with the staff throughout the Village. Those on the East Coast will find it is an easy and quick car trip.

Peddler’s Village features Gorgeous Gardens and Landscaping. Shopping, Restaurants and plenty of activities for all ages!

I loved visiting Peddler’s Village several times a year with my two best friends. Peddler’s Village is such a pleasant and enjoyable day for us. We especially love the gardens, shops and restaurants. At the end of our day, we always went to the ice-cream shop and dilly-dallied before our good-byes till next time!

Like many activities, the Pandemic interrupted those visits with my two dear friends. Now, they both struggle with health issues so we haven’t been able to get together. Missing dear old friends and certain activities is a curse in advancing years. Judging an older person is so easy when it is not yourself! When it hits you, it is another story! My thoughts are my Mother’s words when she got older, “Just wait! You’ll find out soon enough how it is to get old! Then you tell me how it is for you!” She oftened add: “You’ll be sorry when I’m gone!” We snickered at her words, but oh, my, we’re living long enough to repeat them to our kids!

Shops, Festivals, Kids and Family Activities

There is so much to do in Peddler’s Village! It is always a pleasant and enjoyable day. The shops are adorable and so unique. Peddler’s Village Giggleberry Fair

Peddler’s Village is the home of the Giggleberry Fair. It is Bucks County’s lovely playscape for families.

Giggleberry Fair is an indoor entertainment center which features a six-story mountain maze, an antique carousel, arcade, and even a toddler area. Family-friendly indoor and outdoor events, as well as game and toy shops. You never run out of things to do.

Memorable birthdays and other celebrations provide great family fun. Giggleberry Mountain is an absolute marvel! The indoor obstacle course is the largest of its kind and an incredible feature.

Gingerbread Display and Competition

Another holiday tradition since 1984 is the Gingerbread Competition and Display. There are 75 creative entries in seven different categories and is a feast for the eyes! The Village Gazebo exhibits Gingerbread entries from November through January. Times coincide with shopping hours and Admission is free.

Magnificent Grand Carousel Story

The founder and also the creator of Peddler’s Village, Earl Jamison, discovered an antique carousel in January 1998. This priceless carousel was stripped of its original figures and in horrible condition. He was intrigued and felt he could save it and restore it to its original splendor!

To rehabilitate a carousel of this magnitude normally takes at least two years. However, Earl wanted it done much sooner to not disappoint the visitors of Peddler’s Village. He also wanted the same high quality as the original in spite of the short time frame. Local and National craftsmen and artists were engaged to help complete this project. They were all anxious and happy about participating in this very unique opportunity.

The large Muller-style Armor King horse is magnificently made in every detail.

This carousel was built in Philadelphia in 1922 and is one of the grandest creations ever. This was the Golden Age of Carousels. PTC’s fame is for their high-quality machines, durability and beauty! They actually created 89 carousels and numbered each one. Just 26 of these are still in existence. This one had been in storage and in need of so much work that is was going to be stripped for parts. It is PTC No. 59 and one of the most magnificent ever created. Jamison, knowing how much joy it will be for visitors, saved this carousel. It now stands in all its glory as the Grand Carousel of Peddler’s Village!

The Master Carver for the Grand Carousel

Ed Roth, a Master Carver from California, was hired to customize the carving of 46 figures in bass wood. Using the techniques of traditional master carvers from a century ago, he set out to complete the task. A cable network, The Learning Channel, filmed an hour-long program on Ed Roth.

Roth’s 46 carvings for the Grand Carousel were the focal point because he was reproducing exact copies of the most famous carousel figures ever carved. Exceptional and amazing are the Illions Supreme-style row jumpers. The large Muller-style Armor King horse is shown above.

So many menagerie animals, including a Dentzel-style lion, goat, giraffe, one spotted hog, and two rabbits are exquisite. The delicate manes, real horse-hair tails, and as many as fifty glass jewels inlaid in their beautiful trappings
