Spring Gardening Tip No. 1
Once your soil is starting to dry, you can dig your flower and vegetable beds and add your fertilizer to prepare for planting. Don’t get overzealous and start planting too soon. These preparatory jobs can usually begin about the second week in March in the lower Northeast. If winter lingers (snow or frigid temps) it is best to wait until your temps stable around 40 degrees and the ground is drier. Getting an early start on the yard chores makes the planting season more pleasurable and less tedious.
Spring Gardening Tip No. 2
Wear garden gloves after dousing your hands with cream for skin and manicure protection. Some gardeners just love playing in the dirt and for you I say, scrape your nails across a bar of soap to seal the undersides of your nails so dirt cannot collect under them. When your gardening day ends, take a nailbrush and scrub your nails to remove the soap and – wallah – your nails are clean and sparkling!
Weeds grow fast and furiously very early. Now is the easiest time to pull them out by the roots and save it from becoming tedious.
Spring Gardening Tip No. 3
When your beds are ready for planting, start on your pots, the stand-a-lone, and the hanging pots. Clean them with a spray bottle of equal parts of alcohol, vinegar, and water. Spray the mixture on the inside and outside of pots to clear away insect larvae and bacteria. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes and then scrub lightly and rinse. Let pots dry in the sun before using them.
Spring Gardening Tip No. 4
Check your shrubs and trees for any burlap or winter protection and remove all of it. Any winter protection does not permit the much-needed airflow at the trunk, which prevents rotting. Move shrubs that need transplanting before they begin leafing to prevent damage.
Control scale insects and another leftover winter by applying dormant oil spray to shrubs, crabapples, fruit trees and magnolias. Use this organic pest control when the buds are swelling but the leaves haven’t opened yet. Apply when temperatures are between 40 and 70 degrees.
Spring Gardening Tip No. 5
Now is also the time to install new string on your trimmer. Spray with vegetable oil before installing to prevent breakage and jams
Seed bare or damaged patches of lawn now. Use a metal rake to scratch the soil. Use a couple of scoops of grass seed with a shovelful of dirt and spread on the area you are fixing. Rake level and water well until the new grass establishes.
Spring Gardening Tip No. 6
Grass growth is vigorous in the early spring garden, so edge your flower beds with a trench between the grass and beds to keep your yard manicured. To avoid having to repeat this job a few times through the season, install an attractive edging for lower maintenance.
